Hello! Rife Magazine ceased publishing new work in July 2022.

We've kept the magazine online as an archive and hope you'll still continue to enjoy all of its contributions from the last 8 years.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Discover not one, not two, not three but FIVE amazing half-term events in this Rife Guide special to keep you busy all week long.

The wait is finally over; the countdown has come to a glorious end. It’s here. Hooray for half-term. The bright trees have turned a glorious orange and the crisp leaves are falling. But instead of a soggy walk to school, you can enjoy the autumnal scenery in your own time. This half-term, we have brought you not one pick of the week, but five – so you have no excuse not to get out there and do something other than hibernate beneath the duvet. But don’t worry, we’ve left out two days for you to enjoy your well deserved lie ins. And, if you’re feeling particularly motivated this week, then why not try and see them all?

One

The nights are getting darker and the air is getting colder, and that can only mean one thing — it’s time to go to the cinema. I would try and recommend just one film screening at Watershed this week but it would be impossible- there’s just so many to choose from. My three picks however are:

  1. 1. Hilarious (trust me) and sweet Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a coming of age drama about a foster kid who escapes to the New Zealand bush.
  2. 2. American Honey dazzles as it tells the story of a group of hard-partying teenagers as they travel across the American mid-west selling magazines.
  3. 3. Cinema of Dissent season is descending on Watershed this weekend with a variety of films inspired by Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake.

Two

Channel your inner Bear Gryll’s and get involved with the adventure of a lifetime this half term. Calling all 16 and 17 year olds, St Werburgh’s City Farm will be delivering the week long National Citizen Service where you get to have a go at coasteering, rock climbing, mountain biking, cookery classes, helping on the farm, bush craft activities, taking part in a community project, making loads of new friends and so much more. It’s completely free, you’ll have a load of fun and it will look great on your CV, what more could you want?

Three

Using Art and being creative is a proven way to improve your emotional well-being. Off the Record, Bristol’s young person’s mental health charity are fully aware of the benefits and have just opened a brand new Art Therapy space called Inspiration Works. Anyone aged 11-25 can get involved in drop-in sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday such as ‘Colouring In’ and ‘Making Stuff’, and there are also tailored sessions too for young carers, people who have experienced grief and loss and for those who have self-harmed.  All sessions are supported by qualified Art Therapists and they are not art classes, it is a space for feeling and creating. No special art skills required!

Four

Okay, I admit it. This isn’t really something to get you out of the house and exploring this half-term. But, it is something you can get paid to do from the comfort of your own bed. So, I thought I would throw it in. Rife Magazine has introduced Rife Features, where they commission specific content every month around a particular theme. This month, the theme is ‘2016’. They want to hear stories from writers, photographers, filmmakers, and anyone who wants to create a digital content for the magazine about this year. Send your pitches to the editor before 1st November and if you get picked, there is between £75 and £250 available per feature. Sounds good?!

Five

It’s October and it’s Black History Month. As a way of acknowledging and celebrating the importance of African Caribbean culture and history, Bristol will come alive with a range of events, such as dance, music, film, theatre, talks, workshops and much more. Spread over the entire month, here is a selection of exciting events happening this week:

  1. 1. Afrikan History, Heroes Of The Dispora: Exhibition of portraits exploring little known Heroes of the Afrikan Diaspora displayed on wood that will form part of a trail around Bristol.
  2. 2. Bristol Somali Festival: A screening of Somali Documentary Broken Dreams, a Literature and Poetry evening, and a night celebrating Somali culture.
  3. 3. Stars Become Stars: Live Jazz by saxophonist Camilla George in the café/bar of Watershed followed by a late night screening of Bird, after the Jazz visionary Charlie Parker.
