the itch, our new video series spotlighting local Bristol talent, continues with Simran Randhawa performing ‘My Mother’s Dream’.
the itch is a collaborative film project between Rife Magazine and the cheeky cactuses at Clockwise. We come across some of the most exciting talent in Bristol, working here at the magazine, and we want to celebrate everything the city has to offer. So, working with Clockwise, we will be shooting and uploading intimate performances, brash outlandish artistic pieces, stand-up, poetry, music, dance, whatever, in the coming months.
An Interview With Simran
Describe Your Poetry
My inspirations come from my culture, identity, family. I guess, if I had to stretch the ridiculous metaphor, I would describe my poetry as a samosa chaat but instead of the imli (tamarind) sauce the waiter switched it up and used BBQ sauce.
Where Was Your First Gig?
It was actually at Raise the Bar. End of my first year of university and I was sooo nervous – I ended up reciting a poem (‘Not All Borders Are Crossed By Foot’), which went on to be the first video on the Raise the Bar YouTube that got over 1000 views.
What Makes Bristol Special For Spoken Word?
I think the scene here is super tight-knit and supportive, meaning that you get to not only know others in the community but enables word of your work to get around too. One thing I’ve also noted is there’s a real variety in the topics people cover here – a lot of comedic and light-hearted poetry which is really refreshing.
Which Poets Have Inspired You?
Anis Mojgani (forever and always, one and only, favourite of all time, GOAT, etc) and Nayyirah Waheed
What Inspired Your Piece For the itch?
My experience of going to university in Bristol, and the ‘culture shock’ I found it to be, specifically in terms of casual cultural appropriation and the pre-conceived assumptions people approached encounters with me with. (does that make sense? lol)
