Join BFI NETWORK South West and guests as we discuss the complex and changing landscape of online short film distribution in the context of the coronavirus pandemic.

BFI NETWORK Talent Executive, Alix Taylor, will be joined by Rob Munday from Short of the Week, Fran Carr from the British Council, as well as emerging UK filmmakers Kate Cox, Matt Kay & Rhys Marc Jones.

We will take a look at how the shift to online film festivals has affected filmmakers, offer advice for those planning self-distributing their short film online and consider new ways to re-think your overall distribution and festival strategy.

The session will last an hour, there will be opportunity to ask questions via the Zoom Q&A function, will try answer as many as possible during the panel.

Fran Carr | British Council

Fran is the British Council film team coordinator and a filmmaker. She works closely on the Travel Grant and Selector Screening programmes at the British Council and has a documentary short on the festival circuit this year. She has experience in production and development, previously working for Delaval Film in Manchester and was a pre-selector on The London Short Film Festival 2019.

Rob Munday | Short of the Week

After co-founding the website Directors Notes in 2006, Rob joined the team at Short of the Week in 2009 and has been championing short film on the platform ever since. Looking to help a new generation of filmmakers share their stories on a larger stage, Rob believes short film is more than a playground for narrative and craft and is constantly excited and surprised by the new work being made in the format. The only European-based member of the Short of the Week editorial team, Rob is particularly passionate about supporting emerging talent from UK & the rest of Europe.

Kate Cox | Writer/Director

Kate is a writer and director based in London originally from Yorkshire. She graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a First Class Hons in Fine Art and went on to work as assistant art director on a number of features. In 2017, Kate began directing her own scripts and her first short, VERT, 2019, starring Nikki Amuka-Bird, Nick Frost and Olivia Vinall won the SXSW Vimeo Staff Pick award and went on to be featured on Amazon Prime. Kate is currently in pre-production for her second short TORR and has her feature script in the early stages of development.

Matt Kay | Writer/Director

Matt is an award winning documentary filmmaker based in London. He co-founded Walks Of Life Films in 2011 after making his first feature documentary Over The Wall about a British football team’s journey to play in Palestine and has continued making socially conscious, character led documentaries. In the past nine years he’s directed and shot a variety of projects for broadcast, festivals and online. He has filmed in over ten countries including Egypt during the Arab Spring, a Brazilian favela during the World Cup and Japan for his latest project Little Miss Sumo which screened at over fifty film festivals, won several awards and is a Netflix Original.

Rhys Marc Jones | Writer/Director

Rhys is an award-winning Welsh-Irish filmmaker who received his MFA in writing and directing from NYU Tisch School of the Arts as a three-time BAFTA scholarship recipient. His three student shorts have each played film festivals worldwide and his latest short Father of the Bride premiered in competition at SXSW Film Festival and will stream on Amazon Prime Video Direct (US) before being broadcast on BBC. He is developing his first feature film Black Church Bay through the iFeatures scheme, supported by BFI, BBC Films and Creative England, alongside the Festival de Cannes Cinéfondation Résidence.
