On 23 April, BFI NETWORK South West held a Producer’s Lab at Watershed in Bristol for seven new and emerging producers applying with a short film project suitable for the BFI NETWORK short film fund.
The one day lab focused on the role and responsibilities of a producer, managing finance, budgets, practical production considerations for films and working with funding bodies. All delivered by the talented Rachel Robey, Senior Producer at Wellington Films and producer of the BAFTA nominated London to Brighton and more recently The Levelling.
The day was a fantastic combination of practical guidance and informal discussion. The exercises on financing and managing a budget were particularly helpful, and it was an invaluable opportunity to ask some of the questions that had been playing on my mind! With a group of participants ranging from the first-time producer to the relatively experienced, it also provided us with the chance to share our experiences and to lend each other support as we work towards our individual projects.” – Katherine Press
I attended the recent Producer Day chaired by Rachel Robey and found incredibly useful, collaborative and inclusive. It’s this kind of activity hosted by the Talent Hub in Bristol that creates an essential sharing opportunity for regional producers to update skills, keep track of trends, network and refocus on what is important in the challenging world of the Indy Producer. ” – Paul Tully
Thanks to Rachel for the informative, interesting and engaging workshop full of real life examples and stories, and to the participants for getting stuck in and supporting one another by sharing experiences. Now: meet the producers we’ll be keeping an eye on for the future.

I was also accepted onto recent ‘Producer Day’ events attached to Encounters Film Festival 2018 which seeks to develop and network new producing talent in the region. I am currently developing feature documentary and drama projects with exciting new talent across the UK.
I moved to the UK six years ago from New Zealand after training as an actor. I have been lucky enough to have worked in London, Edinburgh and Bristol (where I’ve settled) on the stage and screen. However after questioning with parts of the acting industry my partner and I decided to produce a documentary about Actors in the UK (I’m an Actor) and that is where my interest in film production really took off. I have been working for the past year on this and have recently taken on board a short film that I’m also really excited to share. Alongside this you can catch me teaching Pilates around Bristol or dabbling in a bit of improv.
