The Barn Cinema is a 170 seat, full-time independent cinema built in a 15th century barn, situated in the medieval courtyard at Dartington Hall near Totnes and Dartmoor in Devon. The Barn was converted to a theatre in the 1930s under the eye of Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius, and film screenings commenced shortly after World War II. Today we screen a broad range of films, including the latest releases, independent and world cinema. We also run a popular Q&A and events programme each month, with speakers from across the film world and beyond.
The Barn Cinema is part of the Dartington Trust, a centre for arts and learning. In addition to the cinema, Dartington is a cultural destination comprising Grade 2* listed gardens, an original Henry Moore sculpture, independent shops, a hotel & conference centre, a restaurant bar, cafés, estate land, nature reserves and Grade 2* listed gardens. It is also home to the annual Dartington International Summer School & Festival, and a broad learning programme, from weekend craft courses right through to arts and ecology MAs.
