Other Minds

Artificial Intelligence (noun): A field of computer science that allows machines to perform tasks that previously required human intelligence, such as learning, reasoning, and problem-solving.

Join us throughout September as we explore different kinds of intelligence: animal, mechanical and collective with events, screenings and talks.

In the Pervasive Media Studio the team will be sharing projects that ask what it means to work with minds that are utterly unlike our own, and how AI can be part of a wider conversation about intelligence, labour and creativity. Further details will be published very soon.

Other Minds will be the theme of our conversations at the monthly First Friday event and the weekly Lunchtime talks, which feature projects from our latest residencies, the Make Shift Camp and the wider studio community. At the end of the month come and discover the inspiration behind the 6 commissions for the More Than AI Sandbox at a showcase event where you can see theprototypes, meet the brilliant teams, and play with their creations.

We're also exploring the representations of mechanical or artificial intelligence on screen - presentinga range of sci-fiction films from the last 15 years, each meditating on what it means to be human, and opening up the possibilities of mechanical consciousness. Ranging from mysteries and thrillers (Moon, Ex Machina) to thoughtful dramas (Her, After Yang) and even leaning into rom-com territory with Maria Schrader’s I’m Your Man, this season offers a variety of takes on these ‘Other Minds’ and digs into what they reveal about our own identity and consciousness.
